A BRIEF HISTORY

STONY CREEK FOOTBALL NETBALL CLUB

The SCFNC was founded in 1894 but unfortunately a fire destroyed the books and records relating to the history of the club. On March 17th 1911 the Stony Creek Football Netball Club was reformed and entered into the Meeniyan and District Association. In 2024 the club will celebrate its 130th year and thrive to have a successful year on the football field and netball courts.

Over the years the club has played against towns big and small with a great deal of success. Strong teams in the late twenties and early thirties were followed by similar strengths in the forties and fifties, where sons of former champions carried on the traditions of the club.

1945 - 1951 saw Stony play in seven consecutive grand finals, with unfortunately only 2 victories, coming in 1945 and 1951. The club has won a total of 33 Football premierships and 25 Netball, with the most recent football premierships coming in 2009 (Seniors) and 2018 (Reserves) and Netball premierships in 1978 (A Grade) and 1983 (B Grade).

The Reserves were not formed until the mid forties and success for them was a long time coming. After being runners up in 1978 and 1979, the 2’s went on to win 5 straight premierships all under the leadership of life member Brian Davies.

Stony Creek Football was born in the Zeuschner family and they provided the club with footballers from the earliest of times for sixty years. All Premiership teams contained one or more Zeuschners until 2009. The Dempsey brothers began playing football during the 1920’s and played in all premiership teams of that period. In turn they were replaced by their sons and the family name continued on through the years. Very few years were to pass without a Dempsey playing with Stony Creek.

W. McGrath began playing in 1922 and played into the 1930’s. His family began playing in the 1940’s and continued for many years. They were best known in the years they put at the club as administrators, holding office over a long period of time and bringing junior teams into the competition with success.

The Helms family were a founder and members of the club and played in the very earliest games during the 1890’s and 1900’s. The family carried on and played in the 1920’s and 1930’s, playing in premiership teams. A younger generation carried on playing after the war, going years of service on the field. They also held many offical positions with the club and after retiring as players, they still supplied the teams on Saturdays in administrating the clubs various duties.

Through the 130 years the club has seen success, failure and many disappointments. Years when the club could not function and years when they just missed out on being premiers. Stony Creek is a proud club, always respected and have produced some wonderful Footballers and Netballers.
